Few churches these days can boast a team of servers but St Michael's in Yeovil does. The church is currently without a vicar, and relies on a group of retired clergy to take its Sunday services while it awaits the appointment of an incumbent. This cheerful team, schooled in an Anglo-Catholic church tradition, which is less common today, carries the Sunday rituals out with a sense of duty and satisfaction. It's quite a while since I've swung the incense at the altar, but like learning to ride a bike, you don't forget how to do it. The sweet pervasive smell of incense takes me back to my earlier years, and gives to Sunday church a formality which makes attendance both special and memorable.
H J Massingham (who probably wrote too much) published 'Field Fellowship' in 1942 which gave his reflections on life and people in the Cotswolds. Here are some of mine from south Somerset.
