H J Massingham (who probably wrote too much) published 'Field Fellowship' in 1942 which gave his reflections on life and people in the Cotswolds. Here are some of mine from south Somerset.

Winter closes in
By mid January, winter has tightened its grip in small Somerset villages. Away from the main roads, snow and ice lingers and is reluctant to leave. Travel becomes more problematic and the temptation is to sit tight, and wait 'til warmer weather arrives. The days are still short and the hours of daylight limited. Gilbert White in Hampshire, in the 1700s, used to be closed in for the winter, surrounded by the deep snow-bound lanes of Selborne; all thought of visiting his London friends was put on hold for the winter months. Even in 2023, you can still get a taste of what the winter means in a way that's not possible in the city.
